Eco-san Toilets for environmental sustainability

Ecosan (Ecological Sanitation) toilets are an innovative approach to sanitation that offers
significant environmental, social, and economic benefits.
Natural Resources Defense Initiatives (NRDI) promotes Eco san Toilets in the Rwenzori
Region in a bid to promote a clean and safe environment.
Ecosan toilets convert human waste into valuable resources like compost and fertilizer,
reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers which ultimately makes them suitable for
environmental sustainability and protection.
NRDI has continuously encouraged communities on house hold level, Institutions like
schools, and other organizations to embrace Ecosan toilets so as to protect and conserve the
environment.
“These Toilets help prevent the spread of water borne Diseases by safely managing human
waste, and when human waste is properly managed, then the environment will be protected,”
explained Benon Bwalhuma a water and sanitation expert at NRDI.
Edgar Muganzi the Executive Director NRDI, explains that Ecosan toilets have a number of
advantages among which is empowerment of the communities by providing sustainable
solutions.
“Ecosan toilets are practical in areas without sewage systems, improving access to sanitation
for underserved communities. In regions where sanitation is a challenge, Ecosan toilets
empower communities by providing sustainable solutions,” he explained.
Muganzi noted that by addressing sanitation challenges while promoting resource recovery
and environmental sustainability, Ecosan toilets provide a holistic solution for improving
public health and conserving resources.
