Natural Resources Defense Initiatives (NRDI) has embarked on community engagements in
Semuliki Catchment Ntoroko District in a bid to ensure River bank protection.
According to Edgar Muganzi, the Executive Director NRDI, the major cause of floods in
Semuliki Catchment is due to environmental degradation.
He says the locals are predominantly cattle keepers who graze by the River Bank has
adversely contributed to land fragmentation.
“River Semuliki has continued to consume bigger portions of land because of the poor
economic practices that the locals are using, however the Ministry of Water and environment
through MYP Project has enabled Buffer demarcation which is slowly addressing the
challenge,” he explained.
As NRDI, we always follow up on communities that are adjacent to the River to ensure
adherence to Environmental Laws and Regulations as Stipulated by Ministry of Water ad
Environment.
