Promotion of alternative income generating active (LCV Chairperson Bukedea tests the Coffee pulping Machine)

The LCV Chairperson Bukedea on Friday 4th October commissioned the Coffee pulping
machines that had been delivered by Natural Resources Defense Initiatives (NRDI) a farm
that had been contracted by WWF on behalf of Ministry of Water and Environment to
promote alternative income Generating Activities (IGAs) in Lower Awoja catchment in a bid
to boost people’s livelihoods.
This was in the Sub county of Bududa, in Bukedea District where three coffee pulping
machines were delivered to coffee farmers to promote the coffee value chain.
The LCV chairperson applauded the Ministry of Water and Environment for promoting
sustainable practices towards environmental conservation.
“I would like to extend my appreciation to this Government through the Ministry of Water
and Environment for prioritizing environmental conservation. The Farmer groups which have
received these machines are some of the Project Affected Persons (PAPs) that have been
using the wetlands, so Government is giving them these machines as an alternative income
generating activity,” she explained.
The Resident District Commissioner Bukedea also cautioned residents against cultivating in
wetlands. He said the reason as to why we are currently experiencing environmental
challenges like land slides which are killing people is as a result of misusing the environment.
He warned residents whose land had been demarcated to desist from insisting and cultivating
in the wetlands.
“To day you have received these machines, use them to boost the coffee value chain and stop
insisting on cultivating in wetlands. A number of you are destroying wetlands to cultivate, but
I can assure you that if any of you is found destroying wetlands again, he or she will be
arrested,” he remarked.
Integrated Water Development Project ( IWMDP) has been implementing restoration
activities in Lower and mid Awoja sub- catchment specifically in Lake Okolitorom Sub-
catchment and Apedur-Apapai sub catchment in a bid to enhance environmental
sustainability.
